Ostrov (The Island)

Although new to the monastery gift shop, this 2006 film is already a classic in Orthodox cinema. Set in a remote monastery in the cold Russian North, this is a story about prayer, faith, and true repentance. It is a story of how, with God's help and through spiritual struggle and deep humility, a "rock-bottom" sinner can become a miracle worker and a saint. Though this film is a fictional portrayal of a holy staretz, many of the scenes in the film are taken directly from the lives of contemporary Russian Orthodox saints - especially St. Theofil the Fool-for-Christ of the Kiev Caves and Elder Sebastian of Optina. Winner of 5 Nika Awards (Russian Oscars) including Best Film.
