This 2006 film is a classic of Orthodox cinema. Set in a remote monastery in the cold Russian North, it is a story of how, with God's help and through spiritual struggle and deep humility, a "rock-bottom" sinner can become a miracle worker and a saint.
Though the film is a fictional portrayal of a holy elder (staretz in Russian), many of the scenes are taken directly from the lives of contemporary Russian Orthodox saints - especially St. Theofil the Fool-for-Christ of the Kiev Caves and Elder Sebastian of Optina.
