AFFORDABLE, HAND-CRAFTED WOODEN CASKETS
“Forasmuch as it hath pleased almighty God of his great mercy to take unto himself the soul of our dear brother here departed, we therefore commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life…”
English Burial Service, adapted from Genesis 3:19
Owner Marshall Painter had been working in the log home industry for over 25 years when a very personal circumstance happened in his family. This is when he saw a need for affordable, well-constructed caskets. When Marshall’s mother-in-law passed away, she wished to be laid to rest in an old-world, traditional fashion. Fulfilling her wishes, he constructed a simple, traditional wooden casket… and Dust to Dust rose out of the ashes.
Burying a loved one in a sincere, loving, and dignified manner shouldn’t be complicated or expensive. The goal of Dust to Dust is to provide elegant, earth-friendly caskets shipped to your final destination—funeral home, residence or cemetery.
When a loved one passes on, you have a lot of things on your mind. Deciding on an affordable casket shouldn’t be one of them. Dust to Dust provides affordable and traditional caskets that are individually hand-crafted, in the Mennonite Country of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. All parts of the casket are made to return to the earth in a bio-friendly, naturally green way: from the solid wood exterior, to the natural fabric lining and batting, to the clean hay-filled mattress and pillow. A handful of stainless steel screws are the only exception. What we make is a return to old ways.

“My husband was slowly fading after a long and painful illness, and we were both preparing for his transition to the Next World. I shared my desire to bid a dignified farewell to my best friend and husband with my priest, who recommended that I contact Marshall Painter and his company, Dust to Dust, to make the casket. Marshall was very attentive to my wishes and not only handcrafted a beautiful oak coffin, but also delivered it personally to the funeral home in the Washington, DC, area. Many family members and friends attending the funeral commented on the diginity with which the solid wood piece was designed, and on the simplicity and elegance of the interior. Since then several parishioners have approached me for information on ordering a similar casket for themselves or their loved ones and were surprised at how reasonable to cost was."
